In order to provide proper higher educational facilities to the rural people of Kovilpatti and its neighbouring areas, Lakshmi Mills House, Coimbatore, took the noble decision of starting a college at Kovilpatti in the academic year 1966-1967. Affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, G Venkataswamy Naidu College had a humble start which offered only P.U.C course. Later, in 1967-68 it was upgraded to a 1st Grade College, with B.Sc. in Mathematics as the first degree course. In the following years i.e. 1972 -1973, the college received the approval to start B.Com and also B.Sc courses in few more subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Botany. In 1990-91, the College was upgraded into a Post Graduate Institute. Few job specific vocational courses also form part of the curriculum of this college. Following the Governmental policy, self-funded courses also were started from the academic year 1994-95. Presently, undergraduate courses that are offered includes-- B.Sc in Computer Science, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), B.Sc in Electronics, B.Sc in Costume Design & Fashion, M.Sc in Computer Science, M.Sc in Information Technology, M.Com in Computer Applications and also Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) are offered to the students in postgraduate level. The Self-Financing Courses are held in an individual campus since 1996.

G Venkataswamy Naidu College Library is beneficial to the students. It has a spacious reading room accommodating nearly sixty students at a time. There is also a separate room for storing books. At present the library has a stock of 4858 books and some newspapers and twenty magazines. The Library remains open on all working days, from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.. Other facilities that are provided by G Venkataswamy Naidu College include- bus service for girls, nicely decorated resting rooms for female students, airy and well stocked laboratories, audio-visual laboratory facilitating interactive learning sessions, special language laboratory for spoken English classes. There is ample water supply within the college campus. In fact 2 Aquaguard commercial units have been installed for providing safe and pure drinking water. Students also can browse internet and also can avail telephoning facilities. G Venkataswamy Naidu College also houses an auditorium that can accommodate oven one thousand students at a time.

Besides academics, special attention is given on developing the personality of the students. Enrollment to the programmes of National Service Scheme (NSS) makes them sensitive towards social issues. Students of G Venkataswamy Naidu College also take membership in associations and clubs like-- Junior Jaycee Wing, Fine Arts and Literary Association, Youth Red Cross, Quiz Club. The Students Welfare Council establishes friendly relation between the students and teachers. The Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) also is quite active. Initiated from 24.10.2004, the Alumni Association was formed for facilitating good communication amongst the old students and the college. It also helps the poor students and provides special benefit for the current students. The Career Guidance Cell is very prompt in providing information on job opportunities as well as conducting seminars and conferences.
