With the goal of providing quality education to the students of rural and tribal region, Dr. R.K Shanmugam College of Arts and Science was established in 1997 by Dr. R. K. Shanmugam Educational Trust. The mission of this college is to cultivate and nurture youths of substance, who can contribute in the future for improvement of the condition of people of India. In its days of inception, the college received affiliation of the Madras University. After division, the college at present, is affiliated to the Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore. The college is sponsored with the co-operation of like minded well wishers and is managed by eminent persons. In undergraduate level courses that are offered include-- B.Sc in Computer Science, Bachelor of Computer Application (B.C.A), B.Sc in Mathematics, B.Sc. in Physics, B.Sc. in Chemistry, B.Sc. in Information Systems and Management, B.Com., B.A. in English Literature, B.A in Co-operation, Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.).

Dr. R.K Shanmugam College of Arts and Science also has a Department of Co-operation which offers B.Sc. in Co-operation. The computer, Physics and Chemistry departments of Dr. R.K Shanmugam College of Arts and Science, have their own hi tech laboratory facilities.
Dr. R.K Shanmugam College of Arts and Science library is fully computerised that helps the students and teachers on various subjects, without wasting much time. Development clubs are active in the college promoting various social awareness activities. Students are encouraged to actively participate in activities organised by Red Ribbon Club and wing of National Service Scheme ( NSS). Under supervision of Lions Club, Kallakurichi, the Leo club has also opened its branch in Dr. R.K Shanmugam College of Arts and Science. Blood donation club also is prompt in organising blood donation camps on a yearly basis. Environment protection club has been formed with the motto of safeguarding the nature and its valuable resources. Students are involved for generating awareness, especially amongst rural folks. For encouraging women to take part in several national developmental activities and to arouse their confidence, Annai Tersa Women`s Development Centre has been established. Youth Red Cross Society is a benevolent society, which inculcates the habit of serving the society amongst the students. Govthama Buddha Yoga And Meditation Centre enhances the personality skills of the students of this college.
Dr. R.K Shanmugam College of Arts and Science provides hostel accommodation both for men and women, separated with all the modern facilities. Division system is used for paying the cost of boarding and lodging. Hygienic meals, steam cooking facilities, mineral water plant supplying drinking water in the hostel for 24 hrs, make them comfortable. Besides the students also can get continual power supply with the aid of generators. To enjoy life to its fullest TV, games kit is also offered.
