The Danish east Company named `Dansk Ostindisk Compagni` formed at Copenhagen, Denmark in the year 1616 was shaped under a charter issued by Christian IV, the king of Denmark. This company was authorized to trade with Asia.
A treaty was concluded on 20th November, 1620 between Denmark and the Nayak king of Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu granting the port of Tranquebar (Tarangambadi) to the Danes. Tranquebar is the only Danish settlement in India where the Danes struck coins. In due course of time the Danes also established settlements at Porto Novo in South India and also Serampore and Balasore in Eastern India.
In 1845, the Danes sold Tranquebar to the English. Even now, one can see a majestic Dnaish Fort very close to the sea in Tranquebar.
