Lakkundi, historical site dating back to the Chalukya kingdom, is a perfect place to know more about ancient India.

Lakkundi is a city of temples. With as many as 50 temples scattered throughout the village it makes an interesting place to visit. For a traveler who is interested in the archaeology of a particular place, Lakkundi is a must visit. These temples will take one back to the era of the Chalukyas. The architecture of these temples are truly Indian in style. These temples are real treasures as they date back to the 9th and 10th centuries.

Lakkundi Naneshvara Temple based on Kashi Vishvanath TempleBesides Hindu temples, Lakkundi is also famous for its Jain basadis. Temples dedicated to Mahavira are found here. Among the several temples in Lakkundi Naneshvara Temple (based on Kashi Vishvanath Temple) is the most flamboyant one. It is intricately furnished and successfully reflects the expertise of the ancient craftsmen. The entire city was artistically built by its rulers. It also shows the love and understanding for art in the rulers. The ancient city is also known for its step wells built with canopied niches. These niches have Shiv lingas enshrined inside them.

What makes Lakkundi stand out among other destinations in Karnataka is its architectural grandeur. As a historical traveler one will be amazed to witness the ancient temple complexes. These monuments have been etched out of rock and their high towers and pillared verandahs are quite impressive. The style of the Western Chalukyas was known as the Gadag Style.

Lakkundi is located 12 kilometers east of Gadag district, Karnataka. One can also reach here by car from Bangalore. Train facility is also available in Lakkundi.
