Ghee is a product of cow milk, which has many medicinal effects

In Ayurveda, cow`s ghee, the clarified butter is believed to be the best for human consumption. The ghee is full of nutritive qualities. Ayurveda considers the ghee as Rasayana, a rejuvenating and longevity promoting food. Ghee is traditionally made by making butter from the milk and then heating the milk until it turns golden brown.

Panchagavya-Ghee Ashtanga Sangrah mentions that "Sahasraviryam Vidhibhighrutam karmasahasrakrut" and "Shastam dhismrutimedhagnibalau shukrachakshusham" , which means ghee is extremely potent and can be used in thousand of ways if used properly. Ghee increases digestive power. It helps to improve absorption and assimilation. It nourishes ojas, the subtle essence of all the body tissues, strengthens the nervous system and brain. Ghee also promotes memory. Ghee lubricates the connective tissue. It makes the body flexible and when applied in small amount it cures tridoshas. Ghee calms down pitta and vata and is also effective for Kapha. Persons who already have high cholesterol or suffer from obesity should be cautious before using ghee. Ghee must not be used when there is high Ama or toxic condition. In ghee the coagulated lactose and other milk solids are removed and thereby ghee is suitable for lactose intolerant people.

Ghee is a Yogavahi, which means a catalytic agent that contains the medicinal properties of herbs in the seven dhatus or tissues of the body. For the fall season ashwagandha-shatavari ghee is ideal. For the winter season dashmoola ghee is appropriate. In the spring season favorite spices can be added in the spicy ghee. In summer bitter ghee is good which can be made with local bitter herbs or the formula called mahasudarshan can be tried. Apart from this Brahmi ghee is ideal in summer.

When ghee becomes old its medicinal properties improve but taste reduces. Old ghee is most suitable to reduce tridoshas.

Shata Dhout Ghrita or hundred times washed ghee is ideal for traditional Ayurvedic skin cream as it is chemical free and completely natural. This ghee is very useful for achieving radiant and glowing skin. Shatadhout ghrita is prepared from the organic ghee, which is made from pure cow milk. This ghee is washed for hundred times using the specific method prescribed in Ayurveda. This process transforms the organic ghee into a special kind of ghrita, which is soft, cooling, nourishing and silky cream like.

Shata dhouta ghrita is an excellent astringent, anti-wrinkle, moisturizer, and cleansing cream. It can be used as daily moisturizer on the face or the whole body or also used in facial massage. This type of ghee is effective on reddish or burned skin and on eczema and rosacea.
