The Narasinha Dutt College is the oldest college in the district of Howrah and the biggest college in west Bengal. The college was established in the year 1924 at Howrah. The Narasinha Dutt College had a humble beginning with just seven teachers and hundred and twenty-four students in the residential building of late I.R.Belious. The college offers a number of subjects for the honors courses in Science, humanities and commerce streams. The honours subjects for arts are Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Philosophy, History, Political Science and Education. The B.Sc honours courses are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, Zoology, Botany, Anthropology and Computer Science. B.Com honors is also taught in the Narasinha Dutt College. Apart from the honors courses, the college also offers general course study in under graduation. Narasinha Dutt College also has evening and morning shift where commerce and humanities are studied respectively.

The governing body of the college is in accordance with the statutes of the university of Calcutta and the directives of the State Government; the governing body is responsible for taking major decisions and implementation of the same to fulfill the mission and objective of the college.

The Narasinha Dutt College has well-equipped science laboratories as well as a computer laboratory. There is a well-stocked library also, which has Internet facility. The college can boast of having a computer center, which fulfils the need of Computer science department. Besides, Bio Science department and Physics department have their own computers. There are facilities for career counseling and placement cell, health clinic, students` air fund that provides support to the poor students, students` welfare fund, canteen, students` common room, cheap store, cycle stand, photocopying center etc. scholarships and stipend are provided annually to a good number of the students on the basis of their performance in the university examinations. College magazine is published annually, besides which various departments publish their own wall magazines and departmental journals. Seminars are arranged regularly in the departments both on state and national level to enrich the knowledge of teachers and students. Special remedial classes are organized to supplement the requirement of the backward students. There is a students` union, which plays active and positive role in the academic and administrative affairs of the college. The union organizes sports, blood donation camps, flower show and handicrafts fair. Annual Cultural Programs are also held by the students` union. The college participates regularly in games and sports. The college bears the pride to have celebrated the Golden Jubilee of St. john`s Ambulance and Nursing division. There is also NCC for both boys and girls. The beauty of the college campus is enhanced by a well-maintained garden. The college has a playground where the students can practice different sports.
