Matho Monastery, founded by Lama Dugpa Dorje, is on the opposite banks of the Indus River across Thiksey. It is 26km southeast of Leh. This 500-year-old monastery is the only Saskya monastic establishment in Leh district.
An excellent collection of ancient `thankas`, some in the form of mandalas, can be found here. Also established is a revered shrine dedicated to the guardian deities. Matho monastery is the setting for Matho Nagrang festival, during which monks perform holy dances.
