Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College was previously known as Birla College of Science and Education. Prior to that Birla College of Science and Birla College of education, which were established as two separate institutions in 1968, amalgamated into one college under the name of Birla College of Science and education in the year 1969. Later the name of the college changed to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, which was put in effect from July 1st, 1987 after the name of great scientist Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose.

This is a government aided educational institution under the pay packet scheme of the State Government of West Bengal and affiliated to Calcutta University. The address of the college is 1/1B, A. J.C. Bose Road, Kolkata-700020.

The Honors courses offered here are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, accounting and Finance, Marketing, Bengali, Hindi, English. Apart from this there are general courses in B.A, B.Com, B.Sc(Pure Sc) and B.Sc.(Bio Sc).B.Ed course is also taught here.

The College has well-equipped laboratories as well as a good library to aid the studies of the students.
