A bar refers to an establishment that sells alcoholic beverages for immediate consumption. Contrary to popular belief, there is no discernible difference between bars & pubs. However, Bars that are part of hotels may be known in some areas as long bars or hotel lounges. Nowadays, many bars even serve starters or food to be consumed at the bar.
The terms pubs and bars are very westernized concepts. However, there have always been the various wine and liquor shops, which sell alcohol, but it is not served there. Since India is a country with diverse cultures, the drinking habits of the entire population also vary. And with a country like India, it is a well-known fact that no food of even two cities is alike. In Mumbai many people prefer drinks like wine, vodka, rum, champagne; in short whatever is available. In Goa, people surely prefer the localized" Feni", made from either coconut or the juice of the cashew apple. The rich population of many metropolitan cities can be seen going to lavish pubs and bars, since they can afford them. But, the others have to be contended in going to the "local bars", which serve the local brands at cheap rates. Thus, the local population is always responsible for the drinking culture of a particular city or state.
There are many types of bars and pubs available that have been born as the local culture of today`s population and also to suit the preferences of the crowd. Some of them include the following:
Dancing Bars: Though these bars have come along as a demand of today`s population, often these bars work under the shadows of the night. As the name suggests, these employ young girls and attractive women to dance to the music, the entire night, in addition to the crowd incorporating mild profanity. Mostly, men visit these bars. These are yet however considered as a taboo by the Indian society, since such bars also serve as an easy hideout for notorious criminals and encourage stigmatic activities like prostitution. There are however, even some bars that are frequented only by gay men/ or women.
Singles Bars: These bars are frequented with unmarried people of both genders.
In most cases, such bars typically cater to a particular segment of the population whether they are locals, tourists, students, prostitutes and their clients, members of the leather subculture, office workers in a particular area, country music enthusiasts or whatever. A bar owners and managers typically chose establishment names, decor, drink menus, lighting and other elements they can control so as to attract a certain clientele. Many bars or pubs can also have a small area for dancing but it is not until this area is enlarged and becomes the primary focus that a bar is considered to be a Nightclub or Discothèque.
