Description: Gurudwara Mattan Sahib was built in the memory of the visit of Guru Nanak Sahib to Mattan, in Anantnag District, Jammu and Kashmir.
Gurudwara Mattan Sahib is located in Mattan village of Anantnag District of Jammu & Kashmir. This Gurudwara was constructed in the last half of the 19th century, substituting the old one built by Sirdar Hari Singh Nalwa. Within the Gurudwara complex, there is a chinnar tree, which is believed to be in existence since the time of visit of Guru Nanak Sahib. Gurudwara Mattan Sahib is located 62 kms away from 62 kms from Srinagar. The ancient village of Mattan is located in the northeast of Anantnag.
Mattan, it was also known as Martand, was a popular site for ancient temple ruins. It was in the year 1516 that Guru Nanak began his third missionary tour or Udasi. He visited China, Tibet, and Mansarovar, Jammu and Kashmir. On his way, he also visited Anantnag and Srinagar. It is said that
Guru Nanak visited this place on his third Udasi and he stayed at this village for 13 days. During his stay, Guru Nanaki Dev ji had some discussion with a renowned Sanskrit scholar Pandit Brahm Das. He was touched and shaken by the knowledge of Guru and in his memory built the Gurudwara in Mattan. Gurudwara Mattan Sahib attracts a large number of devotees from all parts of the world especially in the summer season.
