Sudha Malhotra is regarded as one of the topmost singers in India. She started her musical career at the tender age of five. Noticing her talent and commitment, her parents enrolled her to receive training in music. Later on illustrious music director Ghulam Haider from Lahore discovered her during a stage performance in front of sixteen thousand spellbound audience. This programme was held at Ferozepur in aid of the Red Cross.
Then onwards Sudha Malhotra started performing in All India Radio, Lahore. With the help of Ghulam Haider, she started spreading her magic in the world of cinema. At that time she was only eleven years old. Sudha had her training in Indian classical music under the expert guidance of Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan and Pandit Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale. She received her first break as a playback singer with the film Aarzoo, under the supervision of Anil Biswas. The song, `Mila Gaye Nain` proved to be an evergreen song. The Bollywood playback-singing ground experienced the promise of a competent voice.

Sudha Malhotra sang for the films like, Prem Rog (released in the year 1982); Kinare Kinare (released in the year 1963); Barsaat Ki Raat (released in the year 1960); Ek Ke Baad Ek (released in the year 1960); Kalpana (released in the year 1960); Zalim Tera Jawab Nahin (released in the year 1960); Dhool Ka Phool (released in the year 1959); Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (released in the year 1958); Parvarish (released in the year 1958); Ab Dilli Dur Nahin (released in the year 1957); Mr. X (released in the year 1957); Mumtaz Mahal (released in the year 1957); Naya Zamana (released in the year 1957); Mirza Ghalib (released in the year 1954).
Sudha Malhotra is the name of a person who was never frightened to take up any challenges. During the making of the film Didi, N. Dutta the music director fell ill; the songs were needed urgently. Sudha, therefore took over the uphill task of making the album a success. The song `Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jao` from the film (Didi) was composed by her; it was a hit. Sudha has sung in many regional languages besides singing in Hindi films.
Apart from her playback-singing, Sudha Malhotra has fulfilled many stage performances around the world. She has the credits of singing under the music direction of Roshan, S.D. Burman, Ghulam Mohammad, N. Datta, Madan Mohan and others. Sudha possesses the quality of being a versatile singer who can render any type of composition. Her bhajan in Kala Pani, `Na Main Dhan Chahun` became gigantically popular. In the film Barsat Ki Raat she sang the famous qawawali `Ishq Ishq`. This song was recorded for a period of 29 continuous hours. Acknowledging her talent she was awarded the `Kala Bhushan` award by Giani Zail Singh, the then President of India. She was also felicitated for `Dandi` March by Rajeev Gandhi.
In the prime of her glorified career, Sudha Malhotra had the potential to leave in between to settle down in marital bliss. Once again Sudha`s inner strength helped to take such a decision. Her spirit has always been untamed. Therefore Sudha sang bhajans in her family mandir; a birth of a fresh devotional was witnessed. She has come out with a number of bhajan cassettes. Moreover, she has many LPs of ghazals and bhajans. She sang the famous shlokas, `Mano Buddhi Hankar`, for the `Chinmayanand Mission`, which was later re-sung by quite a few other singers. She excels in presenting ghazals too. She sang under the tutelage of Jagjit Singh, Khayyam, and Jaidev and has produced many discs. Today Sudha`s gusto for life is as indomitable as ever.
