After long years of vacuum in the arena of Indian playback singing, Shreya Ghoshal came to fulfill the vacuum. This talented playback singer has rendered her voice in many Bollywood and Kollywood movies. Other than Hindi, she has also sung in languages like Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi. She was born to a bengali family. She was raised at Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota, Rajastan as her father used to work at Bhabha Atomic Research Center as a nuclear power plant engineer for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
Shreya Ghoshal has learnt the nuances of music from her mother who is a post-graduate literature student. She has started companioning her mother on harmonium from the tender age of four years. Under the tutelage of Maheshchandra Sharma she was enrolled to receive training in Hindustani classical music. When she was a child she participated at the Sa Re Ga Ma contest on Zee TV. She won the contest. On illustrious music director Kalyanji`s advice, her parents moved to Mumbai to hone the musicial skills of their daughter. For 18 long months she has been trained under Kalyanji. And under Mukta Bhide she received training in classical music. She again participated for the seceond time in Sa Re Ga Ma as an adult contestant. In the finals, noted music director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was present at the occasion and he spotted Shreya Ghoshal. He offered her to do playback for the role of `Paro` in his movie `Devdas`. In that movie she sang five songs.
The movies as well as the songs were super hit. Then onwards, she has worked with celebrated music directors like M.M. Kreem, Anu Malik, A.R. Rahman, Ilayaraja, Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Pritam.
