This Indian movie `Rang De Basanti` really helps a lot in social awakening. The story is also somewhat different than the typical Bollywood masala movies.

After reading the diary of her grandfather Sue played by Alice Patten who is a struggling British filmmaker comes to India. Her grandfather served in the British Force during India`s struggle for Independence. She plans to make a short film about some of the unsung revolutionary heroes of the Indian Independence Movement. Her friend Sonia (Soha Ali Khan) helps her in this dream project. They decide to find the casting in the university campus and after many trouble they finds four young men to act in the film. They are Daljit popularly known as DJ played by Aamir Khan, Karan Singhania played by Siddharth, Aslam played by Kunal Kapoor and Sukhi played by Sharman Joshi. At first all of them were not at all serious and enthusiastic about the project but as time passes by and also because of Sue`s confidence they become united and starts working seriously. Laxman Pandey played by Atul Kulkarni is a political party activist, who later joins the group. In initial days he was not liked in account of his believe in Hinduism and dislike for Aslam, who is from a Muslim community. As the young men learn more about the history of the Independence movement, they loose their cynicism and start to consider what they can contribute to society. The film has other part connected to Sonia as her fiancé played by R. K. Madhavan an Indian air-force pilot, is killed. He was killed in a plane crash. The government says that the crash took place due to pilot error. Sonia and her friends know that Ajay was a successful pilot. They don`t accept the official explanation.

Ajay`s mother was shattered by the news so was his friends. They were in a view that he sacrificed his life to save hundreds of lives of common people. It could happen if he ejected from the aircraft safely, leaving the aircraft to crash in an overcrowded area. They investigate and finally gets the truth that the crash was due to a corrupt defence minister played by Mohan Agashe. He had actually signed a contract for cheap MiG aircraft spare parts and that too in return for a large kickback. The group decides to go for a peaceful protest in front of India Gate as well. Police forcefully break up their protest in which they also hurt Ajay`s mother (Waheeda Rehman). All these happened so drastically that these young men then decide that they must compete the early freedom fighters and resort to violence. They get the feel how the freedom fighters felt at their time. All of the friends have decided to kill the defense minister Mohan Agashe to avenge Ajay. The minister is speculated to be killed by terrorists and is considered a martyr. But Dj and his friends were not happy as they wanted to bring forth the true story, the group decided to go to the public through a radio station. While the world listens to the story of these brave heroes, all of them are killed in the combined attack by the police and the commandos.
