The Nehru Cup Football Tournament is the tournament organized by the All India Football Federation. The tournament was inaugurated in the year 1982 but was not held between 1998 and 2007. The trophy was won by the Iraq in the year 1997 and then reinstated only again in 2007.
The last 2007 Nehru Cup Tournament occurred in August 17-29,2007 with Syria, Kyrgyzstan, India, Combodia and Bangladesh.
The tournament could not occur in between 1998 to 2006 due to lack of sponsorship and other reasons. The Nehru cup tournament could only be revived in the year 2007 due to the persuasion by the current coach of Indian Football team Bob Houghton. As the original rolling trophy could not be recovered from Iraq, a new trophy was designed.
In the year 2007 India won the Nehru Cup Tournament by defeating Syria in 1-0 margin. Soviet Union won the tournament for 4 times, Hungary 2 times; Iraq 2 times and Uruguay, Poland, Romania, North Korea and India each won single time.
