
Nehru Zoological Park is spread over an area of three hundred and eighty acres and was inaugurated on 6th October 1963. The zoo is a popular recreation spot in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The Forest department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh looks after the administration of the zoo.
The Nehru Zoological Park plays a pivotal role for the other upcoming zoos. It receives grants from the Government of Andhra Pradesh for the maintenance of the zoo. The aim of the zoo is to make a scientific study of animal behavior and disseminating knowledge to the people about peaceful coexistence of wildlife and human life. The Nehru Zoological Park has some notable indigenous animal species like the Indian Rhino, Asiatic Lio, Panther, Gaur, Orangutan, Crocodile, and Python etc. It also has several species of birds as well. The Zoo`s uneven landscape provides a natural setting to the animals and birds. The Miralam Tank in the zoo spread over an area of six hundred acres attracts hundreds of migratory birds. The zoo runs different safari trips every day like Lion safari, Tiger safari, Bear safari and butterfly safari.
One can also enjoy elephant rides in the zoo. Other attractions in the zoo include a museum and a children`s train.
