Singing Career of Ruma Guha Thakurata
In the year 1958 Ruma Guha Thakurata along with
Salil Chowdhury and Satyajit Ray formed Calcutta Youth Choir. She recorded some
Rabindra Sangeet for the films Lookochuri, Jodi Jantem, Bakso Badal and Monihara. She recorded a few Bengali modern songs for films such as Polatak, Lookochuri, Ashite Asio Na, Antony Firengee, Baghini and Benarasi.
She recorded Puroskare Sommane as a tribute to Satyajit Ray after his death. The Calcutta Youth Choir usually sings songs to awaken the society. It has earned the adherence of the masses because of their rendering of folk song, mass song and folk dance.
With the leadership of Ruma Guha Thakurta, the organization Calcutta Youth Choir has been ruling the world of music with the aspiring talents for the last six decades. The organization has however magnetized the younger generations of music lovers. Ruma Guhathakurta`s Calcutta Youth Choir has been regarded as the first amongst the organizations that have established the choir culture in India.
Acting Career of Ruma Guha Thakurata
Apart from music, Ruma Guha Thakurta has also left an impression in the field of acting. As a child artist, she was inducted to the film in Bollywood. In Bengali cinema, she has playacted in more than 100 films. At the age of thirteen as a child artist she joined Bollywood through
Prithvi Theatre. Rajani, Raagrang, Samar, Afsar, Bairaag are some noted Hindi films where Ruma Guha Thakurta has acted. Through the film
Devika Rani, she got the break in "Jwar Bhata" in the year 1944. She fetched the opportunity by giving an impressive dance performance in the film Devika Rani. She has also enacted the main lead female character in the film Ganashatru that was released in the year 1989. The film was nominated for Oscar awards.

Since her induction to the film industry as a successful lead actress, Ruma Guha Thakurta has left extraordinary performances in the films like `Khaneker Athithi`, `Benarasi`, `Ashi te Asio Na`, `Personal Asst.`, `Ganga`, `Abhijan`, `Nirjan Soikote`, `Ponchosor`, `Arogya Niketon` and many more. Personal Life of Ruma Guha Thakurata
In the year 1951, Ruma Guha Thakurta was married to legendary singer
Kishore Kumar. In the following year the couple gave birth to a son namely Amit Kumar. Then she married to Arup Guha Thakurta and had two children by him Ayan and Sromana.
Awards of Ruma Guha Thakurata
Ruma Guha Thakurata has been conferred with many accolades. She received the Soviet Land Nehru Peace Award in the year 1982, the President`s Medal for her performance in Nirjan Saikate in 1963, Banga Ratna in 2009, and the Bharat Nirman Award from the
Government of India.
