Ashoka column, Rampurwa, West Champaran

The entire region of according to archaeologists is a mine of undiscovered burial mounds containing relics of Buddha. At Rampurwa there are two Ashokan pillars.

Recent excavations at one mound revealed a mix of punch-marked coins, cast copper coins, terracotta figurines and clay seals from the first century BC. Four mounds were excavated between 1904-07, two gave up a deposit of burnt bones, charcoal and a gold leaf with a Mother-goddess figure and are a Vedic burial tumuli. One end of the site was revealed a large brick stupa, has multiple polygonal terraces with number of re-entrant angles. This stupa is a very early example of a terraced stupa.
