He has been awarded with the most coveted National Film Award. Born in the tinsel town Anil Kapoor began his career as a supporting role in Umesh Mehra`s Hamare Tumhare in the year 1979.

However, he made his debut in a leading role with the movie "Woh Saat Din" in the year 1983. He has won many accolades for his performances in Yash Chopra`s Mashaal and Shekhar Kapur`s science fiction Mr. India. He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance in "Mashaal". Following after his success in these films Anil Kapoor earned his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in "Tezaab" directed by N. Chandra in the year 1988, and later for Indra Kumar`s Beta in 1992.
Anil Kapoor`s father Surinder Kapoor is a well-known director. Coming from a family of film-oriented background, his elder brother Boney Kapoor is a reputed director and his younger brother Sanjay Kapoor has acted in many movies. He is the brother-in-law of the famous actress Sridevi with whom he has starred in many blockbuster hits. Anil being such a versatile actor has many hits to his credit. Some of his commercial successes have been "Biwi No.1" in 1999 where he was paired opposite Tabu. In the same year he had another success with the movie, "Taal". He received his first National Film Award in the Best Actor category for the movie "Pukaar" in the year 2000. In 1988,

The following year he gave some more memorable performances in movies like "Ram Lakhan" and "Parinda". In the year 1990, he played a dual role in the movie "Kishen Kanhaiya". This was followed by critically acclaimed performance as a middle-aged man in Yash Chopra`s intense emotional drama "Lamhe". Although the film did not do too well at the box office, however, it was a major success overseas. In 1992, Anil Kapoor received his second Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance for the movie "Beta" directed by Indra Kumar. He starred opposite Madhuri Dixit. He then delivered some of the biggest blockbuster hits like "Judaai" in 1997 opposite Sridevi and Urmila Matondkar, "Deewana Mastana" in 1997 opposite Juhi Chawla, "Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain" in 1999 opposite Kajol. Probably one of his biggest successes in his acting career came along with the movie "Virasat". With his excellent performance, he was widely praised by the critics as well as the audiences.
As a producer Anil Kapoor made his first project, "Badhaai Ho Badhaai" where he also starred, did not do well. After which he did critically acclaimed "My Wife`s Murder" in the year 2005 which also failed at the box-office. In 1984, he married Sunita Kapoor and had two daughters and a son. His daughter, Sonam Kapoor recently made her debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s "Saawariya" opposite Rishi Kapoor`s son, Ranbir Kapoor. His other daughter Rhea is studying in New York while his son Harsh is currently in school.
