S Sowmya is a Carnatic musician who has been raised in a traditional South Indian family. The world of music has come in front of her with the hands of her father Dr. Srinivasan, who is a Chemical Engineer by profession. He possesses an enduring passion for Carnatic Music. Later on she was taken under the umbrella of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan. Dr. S. Ramanathan has been reckoned as an exemplary musician, esteemed musicologist as well as extraordinary human being. Afterwards Smt. T. Muktha, of the legendary Brinda-Muktha duo, has further sharpened the musical repertoire. S Sowmya owes her success and achievements that she has achieved till today, to these individuals. She also rests on her success to the bountiful blessings of her beloved Ambal, the Goddess Kamakshi of Kanchipuram.

S Sowmya being a noted performer also possesses the `desire to propagate the traditions of South Indian music worldwide`. In order to fulfill this dream she came in contact with her friend and vocalist Shashikiran. They together in a joint effort established `Carnatica`. It is an institution aims at music & dance instruction, archival, talent search and other related activities. As years pass away, Carnatica`s web portal became a popular online destination for music-related information, products, courses and discussions. Apart from proving her credentials in the field of music, she has also proved her brilliance in the field of academics. She is a double post graduation holder (Master`s in Chemistry as well as Indian Music) and at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) and the University of Madras was a top-ranked scholar. To concentrate on her music, she stopped her doctoral research program at IIT.
