Mahalakshmi Temple is a celebrated temple of Devi Mahalaksmi which was constructed to appease the goddess. It is commonly believed that when the British architects were trying to expand the boundaries of
Mumbai by joining the Malabar hills with Worli, they had to face repeated failures which could only be met by constructing the temple on the bank. It was believed that the contractor dreamt about the construction of the temple and its location. It was only after the construction of this temple that new areas of Mumbai could be constructed as a part of extension project of Mumbai city.
Mahalakshmi Temple of Mumbai has the deity of three goddesses namely Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Maha Saraswati among which Mahalakshmi is the principle deity. These are decorated with nose rings, gold bangles and pearl necklaces and the deity Mahalakshmi is shown riding a tiger and a demon (Mahisur) in tandem which depicts its power to defeat evils as an incarnation of Shakti. The entrance to this temple is ornately designed, the inside always abuzz with the vendors of flowers, sweets, incense sticks, and all. One needs to climb a few 100 steps in order to get to the main shrine; pigeons can be seen at such a height. This temple looks most attractive at the time of Navratri festival when the deities are decorated with special care that attracts millions of followers from all over India who stand in queue all night to worship the deities.
Mahalakshmi temple can be reached by hiring a taxi from
Mumbai Central Railway Station and go towards West; the landmark being Cadbury Company, Mahalakshmi temple is adjacent to the famous Haji Ali Mosque. It takes 5 to 10 minutes from the station. Also, a public bus from Mumbai Central Road Bridge or Tardeo AC Market can be taken.
