Built approximately in 1760 after Salsette had fallen in the hands of the Maratha, the Kopineshwar Temple is an example of refined Indian architecture.
The temple stands to the east of the municipal garden named after Mahatma Gandhi and managed by the municipal council and is believed to have been built in the honour of Kopineshwar that was found under water. Kopineshwar Temple is one of the oldest temples of Thane, reconstructed by Chimaji Appa (younger brother of Peshwa Thorle Bajirao). The shrine is about 5 feet in height. Within the temple`s perimeter, are six small shrines dedicated to Brahmadev, now popularly known as Panchmukhi Mahadeo, Rama, Maruti, Shitaladevi, Uttareshwar and Kalikadevi.
