According to the demographic survey of 2001, Jalpaiguri holds about 3,403,204 populations on a whole, with an average density of 547 per sq km. About 1,753, 278 are male, 1, 649,926 are female and about 512,357 of population are between 0-6 years of age. As the demographers have noticed, in spite of a pretty comfortable economic condition, the district is fundamentally rural and a huge mass of population (2,799,357) still resides in the villages.
The economically developed district, Jalpaiguri, is trying to achieve a desirable growth in the educational process. The recent demographic report verified that the Government is successful to provide education to 1,839,036 people within the year 2001. Several programs for the eradication of illiteracy have also been implemented to bring all the people under the shade of education.
The tea industry and the Government offices here create a large supply of workforce. About 1,305,668 people are somehow employed and only about 265,099 people draw living by cultivation, of which 230,363 are agricultural labors.
According to the information approached by the demographers, though Jalpaiguri represents a multi-ethnic culture, Bengali is the most spoken because the land is inhabited mainly by the Bengalis. Hindi, Nepali and kurukh (a dialect of Nepali) are spoken by the immigrants, who came in search of lucrative prospect during the British era. Mainly the Hindu, Muslim and the Christian religions are common in the region yet a number of tribes from the nearby region have settled here.
