The Vedavati River is a major tributary of Tungabhadra River. It originates from the Western Ghats and flows through the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Veda and Avathi rivers, which rise in the eastern part of the Sahyadri Hill range (Western Ghats) flows in the eastern direction after its birth. The two rivers merge near Pura a village in Koppal district of Karnataka to form the Vedavati River.
The Suvarnamukhi River merges with the Vedavati River at Koodalahalli in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district of Karnataka. The locals consider it as `Punya Bhumi` or consecrated land. The river then flows down in the southeastern direction and enters the state of Andhra Pradesh. In Andhra Pradesh, the river is called Hagari and the local people along this belt depend on the river for their requirements. Finally, the river merges with the Tungabhadra River at Mantralaya, a temple town in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh.
There is a temple of Shri Anjaneya (Hanuman) on the banks of the Vedavati River at Kellodu near Hosdurga taluk in Chitradurga district. The first reservoir of Karnataka, the Vani Vilasa Saagara reservoir was constructed across the Vedavati River.
