Tezpur University is a Central University located at Napaam, about 15 km east of Tezpur, the headquarters of the Sonitpur district of Assam. The sole aim of the University is to offer academic courses as well as to promote research in various areas of study. It also aims to make higher education accessible to large segments of the population.
An Act of Parliament established the University in 1994. It is spread over 242 acres of land. The University provides undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes under the various schools. The School of Science and Technology heads the Department of Physics, Department of Chemical Sciences, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and Department of Food Processing Technology. The School of Humanities and Social Science consists of Department of English and Foreign Languages, Department of Cultural Studies, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and Department of Sociology. The School of Energy, Environmental and Natural Resources controls the Department of Energy and the Department of Environmental Science. The School of Management Science consists of one department, the Department of Business Administration. The School of Engineering heads the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering.
