Tamil University caters higher education through Tamil language while offering some special courses.

Tamil University is located at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu.It was established in the year 1981 with a view to cater higher education through Tamil Language and to promote rich Tamil language ,literature ,culture ,etc.It is a public University and recognised by the University Grant Commission.The University has sprawling Campus of 800 acres .The campus contains administrative buildings and academic buildings,Library, Language Block, women`s hostel, boy`s hostel, Guest House and an open air theatre etc.

The University offers various courses in the field of Linguistics, Translation, Lexicography, Music, Drama Sculpture, History ,Manuscriptology,Ancient Medicine ,architecture,Computer Science etc through the deparments of Sculpture,Music Drama(under the faculty of Arts),Pamleaf Manuscriptology,Rarer Paper Manuscriptology,Underwater Archaeology,Epigraphy(under the faculty of Manuscriptology) Tamil Studies , Lexicography, Translation,Social sciences ,Scientific Tamil & Tamil Devolopment,(under the faculty of devoloping Tamil),Folklore ,Indian Languages,Philosiphy, Linguistics,Literature,Tribal research (under the faculty of language.),Siddha Medicine,Ancient Science,Industries and Earth Sciences ,Computer Science ,Architecture (under the faculty of science).The University also offers M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in, History ,Literature, Translation, Sculpture, Language, and Architecture

The Library of the University was modelled after Indian Parliament House. The library has a huge collection of 1,36,324 books and 393 journals. The Library focuses on collecting and preserving old and rare books. The Library also provides linguaphone records; audiocassettes, videocassettes and CD`s are available as reference. There is also museum, which contains different materials related to Tamil Community and many other things.
