One of the prominent agricultural universities of India is the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. It is located at Shalimar, which is at a distance of 14 km from
Srinagar.

The University was established in August 1982, through an Act passed by the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature. The University started its operations in the year 1983-84 its territorial jurisdiction extends to the Kashmir Division, including Ladakh. This multicampus University operates on the Land Grant Pattern of USA. There are nineteen divisions in the university; specifically designed for organizing research. Teaching and for the greater purpose of other extension activities. It has established twenty-five stations and units in various places for carrying out location specific research
To educate the farmers, the university also provides technical education in regard to agriculture and other related fields to the farmers. To develop the overall condition of the rural people, the university has taken a number of measures.
