Purvanchal University is now known, as Veer Bahadur Purvanchal University, which is located in Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh. The University is named after Late Shri Veer Bahadur Singh, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The University was established in 1987 and is a residential cum affiliating University. The University is situated ten kilometers from the city of Jaunpur on the Jaunpur -Shahganj road. The nearest railway stations are the Jaunpur Junction Railway Station and the nearest airport is Babatpur.
Initially, the University started with sixty-nine affiliated colleges and at present it has more than two hundred colleges under its wing. The territorial jurisdiction of the district extends over ten districts of Uttar Pradesh namely, Allahabad, Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Sonbhadra, Azamgarh, Ballia, Chandauli and Ghazipur. The various faculties of the University are Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Management Studies, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Applied Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
The University is trying to impart education in this backward and rural region of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
