Pandit Jasraj has been reckoned as one gem of the Indian Classical vocalist necklace. This Hundusthani classical music advocator belongs to the Mewati Gharana of classical music. Pandit Jasraj is being honored as the `contemporary doyen of North Indian Vocals`. Like other artists he has also been praised with many awards.
This classical maestro was born on 1930 at Hissar, Haryana to a family of musician. His family is serving in the field of music for four generation. This Mewati Gharana disciple was initiated to the music under the umbrella of his father, late Pandit MotiRamji. Later on he has continued his training under the guidance of his elder brother late Sangeet Mahamahopadhyaya Pandit Maniramji. After being trained from such legendary musician, Pandit Jasraj`s singing became `a harmonious blend of classic and opulent elements, projecting traditional music as an intense spiritual expression, at once chaste and densely coloured`. He has also received training under his spiritual guru, late Maharana Jaiwant Singhji of Anand.
Pandit Jasraj always attempted to experiment with his music. As he holds a good command over all the aspects of `Laya`, it reflected through the clarity of `Sur`. Utmost tunefulness in his execution on the top of great choice of composition has always been his trademark. Pandit Jasraj delve into the musical journey after experiencing Begum Akhtar`s gazal `Deewana banana hai to diwana bana de...` (make me insane if you please...). He was then only six years old child. At that very tender age he has decided to be a singer. He was inducted to the musical journey with her father. Afterward, Pandit Jasraj underwent training in tabla under the expert tutelage of Pandit Pratapnarayan.
Pandit Jasraj`s vocal and religious journey in the world of music geared up under the great guidance of his older brother Sangeet Mahamahopadhyaya Pandit Maniram. Maharaja Jaywant Singhji Waghela of Saanand has always been the spiritual influence behind him. To his credit Pandit Jasraj has created many noteworthy unique compositions. As the originator of these unique collections Pandit Jasraj has carved a niche for his compositions in the history `as the work of a genius and as one of his great contributions to Indian music`. He has performed in a novel Jugalbandi (duet). This Jugalbandi is the Jasrangi that takes its stimulation from the ancient system of moorchanas. As he said, he has excogitated the duet, "Like the Yin and the Yang or Shiv-Shakti." The Jasrangi is considered to be an aesthetic fusion of the `Purush (Male) and `Prakriti` (Female). It is a symmetrical coalesces in which `the male and female singer, each with individual accompaniments, sings different ragas at their own respective scales, interweaving them into a wondrous whole`. Pandit Jasraj has bagged the honor of creating and testing over a hundred bandishes. But he has also cut through the unknown path of singing Sanskrit verses in pure Hindustani classical style. Honored philosophers like Adi Shankaracharya, Vallabhacharya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Swami Vivekanand once upon a time have authored them. An ancient Sanskrit composition on his voice seems to be great ease. The quality of being holy of the Sanskrit verses combined together with his irreproducible devotional quality of singing however has been able to create an extremely agitated atmosphere of the divine. Under the direction of Shyam Manohar Goswami Maharaj his deep research in Pushti Margi Sangeet/Haveli Sangeet (Traditional Temple Music of the Vaishnav sect), has given many rare and enlivened compositions.
His wife Madhura Jasraj, the daughter of V. Shantaram the pioneer of Indian Cinema is the woman behind this astonishing personality. Shaarangdev and Durga are the proud children of this couple and are well established in the field of music direction and small screen .
