The University caters to the educational needs of Meghalaya.It is Central University.The University has two campuses located at Shillong and Tura.

The University has over 50 affiliated colleges including professioal colleges across the state.The University offers several postgraduate and research oriented programmes through the schools of Social Science, Humanities & Education, Economics, Management & Information Science, Technology ,Physical Science, Life Science, Human & Environmental Science.
