The Mizoram University Act, 2000 established the Mizoram University on 2nd July 2001. It is a Central University having His Excellency, the
President of India as the visitor. The territorial jurisdiction of the Mizoram University extends to the whole of
Mizoram and also the former jurisdiction of the Mizoram Campus of the North Eastern Hill University,
Shillong that operated till 1st July.

The permanent campus of the University is situated at Tanhril spread over an area of more than 950 acres. The University is rapidly developing in terms of infrastructure. The campus has several amenities namely a Sports Cell, Medical Clinic and Central Library.
The University is a teaching cum affiliating University and has twenty-seven undergraduate colleges including two professional institutions under its wing. Initially, it started with seven academic departments that it inherited from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong but now it has twenty-eight academic departments. At that time it did not have a permanent campus and the departments were scattered for two decades in
Aizawl.
The objective of the University is to impart and advance education and make provisions for research facilities. It aims to promote innovations and train and build manpower in the state. The qualified professors of the University are doing quality research on various disciplines and thus helping in the growth of the University.
