Konnagar city , which is located in Hooghly district, is the birth place of famous personalities like Sri Aurobindo.

In the state of West Bengal, there is no dearth of cities and towns that have flourished in huge number. Amongst them, one distinguishes Konnagar to be quite significant. In the district of Hooghly of West Bengal , this city is located on the western bank of Hooghly river.

A municipality has been established in charge of Konnagar. It lies under the jurisdiction of Uttarpara police station of Serampore subdivision. Strategically, Konnagar is located approximately at 22.7° N 88.35° E. It rises to a height of 14 metres or 45 feet above the mean sea level. Konanagar has been placed in between places like Rishra and Uttarpara on the `Howrah-Bardhaman main line` and also the renowned Grand Trunk Road. Without identifying the demographical details of any place or town it becomes next to impossible for a person to develop familiarity of that place in the proper sense. For that reason, demographers have invested maximum of their time in gathering specific data about Konnagar`s demography. In the vista of reports that have been prepared, the name of Census report of a specific report is worth mentioning. Being issued out in the year 2001, this report has highlighted population status, literacy condition of Konnagar. Thus as per this report, the total population of Konnagar showed a count of 72,211. Following the footsteps of other places of India, in Konnagar also, males are more than females. To be specific, male populace of Konnagar constitutes 52 % while the population of females is 48 %. Children who fall into the age group of below six years constitute 8 % of the total population.

Experts also have regarded literacy condition to be an important indicator to measure growth and development of a particular town. Regarding Konnagar city`s literacy condition one can be infer data from this report as well. Thus as per the report the average literacy rate of Konnagar has been measured to be 80 %. Thus it is even higher than that of India, which has been measured to be 59.5%. Not only it is known that male literacy is 84 % which indicates the propensity of males in Konnagar towards education . However female literacy rate is also no less insignificant.

In other words, 77 percent is the female literacy rate of Konnagar. In Konnagar numerous educational institutes have also developed. Konnagar Boys High School ;Konnagar Hindu Girls School ;Ashalata Balika Vidyalaya; Konnagar Rajendra Smriti Vidyalaya; Konnagar Sri Aurobindo Vidyapith; Xavier`s English School; Shishu Bharati School ;Bidyapith; Konnagar College; Kanaipur Boys School ;Kanaipur Girls School; Hiralalpal Balika Vidyalaya are significant.

There is an interesting history about this Konnagar city. Nineteenth century is the landmark since at that time Konnagar has elevated its status as a town from that of tiny village. Sib Chandra Deb, a famous Brahmo leader and also a believer of ideals of Derozio, have imparted Konnagar`s growth. He had also taken the initiative of ameliorating condition of the then women and also built schools for them in the locale. In the years 1856 and 1858 respectively a railway station and post office were built.

Not only that , Konnagar is the birth place of quite a number of important persona of India . Sri Aurobindo, renowned nationalist and also a `religious leader`and Sisir Kumar Mitra, the famous `physicist` were rooted to the soils of Konnagar. Not only Konnagar is the homeland of Shafiur Rahman , who played pioneering role in the language movement of East Pakistan .
