The first University of northeast India is the Gauhati University whose administration is looked after by the state. It is located in the western part of Guwahati, in the Jalukbari area. The University was established in 1948, and has been accredited with a four star status by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The campus area has now developed into a small township and is known as ` Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar`.
Gauhati University is at a distance of 5 kilometers from Kamakhya Railway Station and 10 kilometers from Guwahati Junction Railway Station. It is easily accessible from Kokrajhar.
Gauhati University belongs to the Indian Council of Historical Research and offers courses under the faculties of arts, science, commerce, law, engineering and medicine. The Gauhati University also has a campus at Kokrajhar, which was established in the year 1997. The Kokrajhar campus has our departments namely, Assamese, Boro, English and economics. The University is a teaching cum affiliating University and has one hundred and eighty three colleges affiliated to it.
