In the ancient and holy place of Varanasi is built the Durga Temple. One Bengali Maharani built the temple in the 18th century.
As the name suggests, Goddess Durga is wor8shipped in this temple. She is a significant sign of Parvati, the spouse of Lord Shiva. She is worshipped in the form of Shakti, signifying the female element of Power and harmony in nature.
The Durga temple is stained in Red with ochre. Though a Bengali Maharani built this temple, it does not boast the Bengali influence spiritually. It is exclusively built on the North Indian pattern called Nagara. There are multi-tired spires placed in horizontal pattern and is entirely different from the traditional temple style.Separate spires are clubbed together to give the effective style. This style is apparently less attractive than the South Indian Gopuram. This temple is also called by the name of `Monkey Temple` as lots of monkeys create menaces and also inhabit the temple.
Local people believe that Goddess Durga residing in the temple save the whole of Varanasi from the south. She is considered as one of the fierce goddess guardians of the sacred zone. They also believe that nobody created the image of Durga. It is a self-manifest image.
Cabs, autos and local rickshaws are available to reach the temple throughout the year.
