University is named after Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia who was a freedom fighter and a political leader. It assumed the shape of residential university in 1975. Initially the residential segment became functional with the opening of the four departments: History Culture and Archaeology; Rural Economics; Mathematics and Statistics; and Physics and Electronics.

The university has been conducting undergraduate/postgraduate studies and research in Economics, Mathematics & Statistics, Bio-Chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences and M.B.A. The subjects of Extension Education & Rural Development, Mass Communication & Journalism, M.S.W., Library Science and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), postgraduate diploma in fashion designing are running on campus.
