A Legislative Act established the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences on 2nd January 1995 at Kolkata. It consists of the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science. Previously, the Bengal Veterinary College conducted the Veterinary education of the state, which was established in 1893. This was the second oldest veterinary college in the country, which functioned under the Calcutta University till 1974. In 1974 the College was combined with the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, which is situated at Mohanpur in Nadia district. Under the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences was organized.
During the centenary celebrations of the Bengal Veterinary College in 1993, a decision was taken to establish an independent Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to fulfill the growing needs of education and research in this field. Accordingly a committee was constituted by the Government of West Bengal and as per the proposals of the committee the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences was established in 1995. Shri Jyoti Basu inaugurated it, the then Hon`ble Chief Minister of West Bengal on 31st May 1995.
The Faculty of West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences , Kolkata deals with the following subjects, Veterinary Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Veterinary Physiology, Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Pathology
Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Phraseology, Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Veterinary Gynecology and obstetrics
Veterinary Medicine, Ethics and Jurisprudence, Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Veterinary Public Health, Animal Production and Management, Animal Nutrition, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Products Technology and Marketing and also Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension.
The objective of the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences , Kolkata is to disseminate knowledge in various branches of Veterinary and Animal Sciences along with Dairy Technology and Fishery Sciences. It also aims to improve animal and fish production.
