Sree Sankaracharya University was established by the Sree Sankaracharya University Act, 1994.It was named after the great Indian Philosopher Jagadguru Sree Adi Sankaracharya.The main objective of the University is to promote Sanskrit, Indology, Indian Philosophy and Indian Languages. It is located at Kalady in Ernakulam.Governor of Kerala serves as the chancellor of the University.
There are ten regional centers of the University across Kerala.The library of the main campus contains 65,000 books in monograph section, more than 200 rare manuscripts in manuscripts section, more than 100 Foreign Journals and 60 Indian Journals in the periodical section. Every year the university announces one senior and junior research fellowship of 1lakh rupees.
The University has several under Graduate, Post Graduate, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy Courses in different Subjects. There are 22 departments in the University. These are Sanskrit Sahitya, Vyakarana, and Nyaya Ayurveda, Vastu Vidya, Vedanta, History. Economics, Social Work, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Philosophy, Urdu, English. Hindi, Malayalam, Music, Painting, Painting, Theatre.
