Rabindra Bharati University is a university with its campus in
Kolkata. It was established under the Rabindra Bharati Act of West Bengal in 1961. It was founded on May 8, 1962 on the occasion of birth centenary of the Nobel laureute
Rabindranath Tagore. It is located at the Tagore family home, Jorasanko Thakur Bari. The University provides courses in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

In 1962, the university occupied the former residence of Rabindranath Tagore. The Fine Arts and Visual Arts faculties of the University remained there while the Faculty of Arts which came into being in 1976 was located in the new campus. The new campus is on the grounds of the Emerald Bower. It is a mansion built by Harakumar Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore`s uncle. Later the mansion was occupied by the Government of West Bengal and became a complex of academic institutions. Rabindra Bharati University has a major share in the campus. The Emerald Bower Campus is also the administrative seat of the University.
