Museums of Tripura
Museums of Tripura have preserved the glorious details of the past art, relics, and artifacts of the state.

Tripura is one of the most beautiful states of India having its western, northern and southern neighbour as Bangladesh. It is having Mizoram to the east and to the north-east it shares its boundary with West Bengal. The beautiful natural setting with dales and hills, streams flowing from the hills and extensive green valley, makes Tripura one of the most favoured tourist locations.

One of the major attractions of Tripura is the Tripura Government Museum. It is a storehouse of manuscripts and artifacts which are a characteristic of the northeastern historical glories. The museum was opened in the year, 1970, on the 22nd of June. It is a vital part of the cultural variety of Tripura. It has also been accorded the renowned status as a State Level Museum. Located in Agartala, this museum is close to the Chowmohani post office.

The Tripura Government Museum is gifted with four beautiful galleries including the Archaeological Gallery, Painting gallery, Tribal Culture gallery and Indian Sculpture through the ages gallery. These galleries put in display a brilliant collection of more than 1645 historical memorabilia. A large number of silver, gold and copper coins are possessed by this museum. These coins have been received from the archaeological excavations which are some of the major attractions for the historians and scholars. Several sculptures, pottery pieces and primordial copper inscriptions and terracotta, bronze figurines are on display. Outstanding oil paintings on canvas, illustrations and sketches, textiles, ornaments and jewellery add to the beauty of the museum`s galleries. The museum`s musty archive possesses some of the precious manuscripts that contain the history of Sanskrit and Bengali epics. There is also a library containing a huge collection of rare and out print publication on the archeology, history, architecture and anthropology of Tripura.

The Tripura Government Museum is thus the preserver of the instances of the rich culture and tradition of the hilly state. It is also one of the major attractions for general tourists as well as the scholars and historians. A visit to this museum in Tripura gives an experience which can be nourished in the mind for long.

The Tripura Government Museum is open for visitors throughout the week except on Sundays and all other national holidays. It opens at 10 A.M. in the morning till 1 P.M. and 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. An entry fee of Rs.2 per individual is paid by the visitors.

Tripura has a large to offer apart from the museums. Tripura wildlife can be enjoyed by visiting some of the sanctuaries like Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary, Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary, Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary and Sepahijala Sanctuary. There are several Buddhist shrines and temples in the state like Kamalasagar Kali Temple, Tripura Sundari Temple, Bhubaneswari Temple, Buddha Temple in Venuban Vihar in Agartala, Buddha temple at Manu Bakul in the southern parts of Tripura and Buddhist Temple at Pecharthal in the northern parts of Tripura. All these are the preferred destination for religious tourism. Some of the other major attractions of this state include the Kunjaban Palace, Kamalasagar Lake, Ujjayanta Palace, Dumboor Lake, Neermahal, Tripura Government Museum, Dumboor Lake, Jampui Hill, etc. Among the tourist destinations, Museums of Tripura offer a suitable opportunity to venture deep into the rich tradition and culture of Tripura.
