Aizwal, the capital city of Mizoram is one of the most attractive places to visit. It is also considered to be the center of religion and culture of the Mizos (People of Mizoram). Situated in the southern parts of Mizoram, Aizwal possesses breathtaking natural beauty. All Government offices, civil secretariat and state assembly house are there in this city. The city also possesses a range of jungle products, memorials and monuments connected to folklores and legends.
Mizoram State Museum is one of the major attractions in Aizwal, Mizoram. The museum was founded in the year, 1977. It is an ethnological museum having separate gallery especially for the tribes of Mizoram. It is a multi-purpose museum placed on the Macdonald Hill. The Mizoram State Museum is open from 10 A.M. till 4 P.M. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It is kept open from 10 A.M. to 02 P.M. on Saturday and Monday. As several other museums in different parts of India, the Mizoram state museum remains closed on public holidays and Sundays. This museum accommodates a large number of objects which reveals Mizoram`s rich cultural heritage. The entire collection of the items in this museum adds up to 2500. The rich past and the ethnic background of Mizoram are put on display at the Mizoram state museum. Some of the items to be seen in this museum are: Photographs, Archaeological objects, Musical instruments, Natural history specimens, Arms and Weapons, Utensils, Stone sculptures, Tribal textiles, etc.
Another significant museum of Mizoram is the Mizoram Science Centre. This museum is the first of its kind in Mizoram. It has been founded on a hill at Berawtlang with close proximity to Tourist Complex in Aizawl. The Science Centre of Mizoram has been developed and designed by the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Department of Culture, Govt. of India in association with Technology, Science & Environment, Planning Department, Govt. of Mizoram. The inauguration of this museum was done on the 26th of July, 2003 by Pu.Zoramthanga, the then Chief Minister of Mizoram.
Mizoram Science Centre provides an opportunity to the tourists to take pleasure in the wonder of science. The aim of this museum is to spread awareness through amusement and fun. Visitors from all over India and various other parts of the world come to Mizoram to have a feel of the Mizoram Science Centre. Some of the activities at this museum include the organization of science article and essay writing competition. This is carried on to encourage high school, secondary and college students in the fields of science.
Thus, the two museums of Mizoram are the major places of attraction for people visiting this hilly state of Northern India. While the Mizoram State Museum holds the treasures of the ancient culture and tradition of the Mizos, the Mizoram Science Centre is an example of the interest of the people of Mizoram towards science and its various aspects.
