Located in the Amritsar district of the state of Punjab, Khem Karan is an example of nagar panchayat town.

While traveling in the heartland of Indian subcontinent it is not possible that one does not find any town or city there. In the state of Punjab also there is no dearth of towns as well. Amongst them one can distinguish Khem Karan. In fact it is an example of nagar panchayat town. It is situated in the district of Amritsar district of Punjab state of India.

An extensive research on the demography of any town of Indian Territory enables a person to get acquainted with the features of that particular town. This Khem Karan town is also not an exception. Due mentioning may be made of the census report that has been brought out in the year 2001. The relevance of this report is due to its depiction of information of literacy rate, population status etc. According to this report, the total population of Khem Karan showed a counting of 11,938. Out of it , male populace comprises of 55 percent , while the rate of female populace is 45 percent. In Khem Karan, children who are six years old constitutes of 15 percent of the total population .

As far as the literacy rate of Khem Karan is concerned , its average literacy rate is 47 percent . It is lower than that of the whole nation, which shows a count of 59.5 percent. Both male and female literacy rate too are incorporated in it. Rate of male literacy is 54 percent and it is higher than that of females. 39 percent is the female literacy rate.
