| Hiyang Tannaba
| |
| Hiyang Tannaba is a very famous boat race, which takes place in Manipur, and is an essential ingredient of one of their prominent festivals - Lai Haraoba. The boat race is a part of Manipuri folklore. Mythology makes a reference to the boat race between Lainingthou and Lairembi. And on the final day of Lai Haraoba, the boat race event is recreated in form of a game called hikaba. A seasonal game in which only men are allowed to take part, the boat used is called hee while the oars are termed nou.
Many beautifully decorated boats are seen participating in this game. The dimensions of the boat are variable and it is a pre requisite to have at least 20 sailors in a boat. Even the sailors are up for the festival by dressing up in nice traditional outfits. The teams have a captain who themselves at the bow of the boat. Judges too are appointed - one positions him at the starting line and the other at the finishing line. Supporters of both teams are present for encouragement.
