Chaudhary Charan Singh Agricultural University is located in Hissar of the northern state of India, Haryana. Earlier the University was known as the Hissar Agricultural University (HAU) and got its present name after Chaudhary Charan Singh, a former Prime Minister of India. The University is administered by the state. Initially, it shared its campus with the Punjab Agricultural University, which is located in Ludhiana. In 1966, when Punjab and Haryana became separate states, Chaudhary Charan Singh Agricultural University became an `independent land grant institution`. The University is widely acclaimed for producing high yielding grains and cotton varieties. The first Vice Chancellor of the University was Mr. A.L. Fletcher. It was his efforts and dedication that Chaudhary Charan Singh Agricultural University became one of the best-known institutions in Asia with modern infrastructure, laboratories and other facilities on the main campus.
The present number of colleges under the University is seven. They are College of Agriculture, College of Agricultural Engineering, College of Animal Sciences, College of Basic Sciences, College of Home Sciences, College of Sports and College of Veterinary Sciences. In fact, it is the first University to create a separate college for sports in India. The University has a separate research and training farm, which is spread over 3,000 acres of land, which is nearly equal to1, 200 hectares. The University also acquired 2,000 acres of land for conducting research on seeds. The faculty of the University consists of more than one thousand scientists who have been educated or done their research abroad in their field of specialization.
Chaudhary Charan Singh Agricultural University is one of the three Indian universities to receive the World Bank project on Agricultural Human Resource Development.
