It is believed that the town was named after Lalita the wife of the southern king, who built this town. Tanning saw milling; soap making and shoe making are some of the prominent industries of the city. Prime attractions in the vicinity includes the Govind Sagar Dam and the towns of Chanderi and Deogarh. The Indian Census Report of 2001 states that Lalitpur had a population of 111,810. Males and females account for 53% and 47% of the population. In Lalitpur, 16% of the population is less than six years of age.
