Junagadh, Gujarat

Junagadh is a city in the Junagadh district of the western state of India, Gujarat. It is the district headquarters of the Junagadh district. Located on the foot of the Girnar hills it was known as Sorath, which was a Muslim ruled princely state of Junagadh. It is situated in the southwest of Ahmedabad at a distance of 327 km.

The nearest access points are the international airport at Ahmedabad and the domestic one at Porbandar. The nearest railway station is the Junagadh junction Railway Station on the Mumbai -Ahmedabad line of the Western Railways. Strategically located near NH 8D, it is well linked to other important towns and cities of Gujarat like Veraval, Somnath, Porbandar and Rajkot. Geographically, the town is located between 21.52° North latitude and 70.47° East longitude at a height of 107 metres (351 feet) above mean sea level.

The name Junagadh in Gujrati means old fort. History records, that Junagadh was the capital of Mauryan and Gupta dynasties and the Chudasama Rajputs in the medieval period.

The Census report of India as published in 2001 states that Junagadh had a population of 168, 686. Males and females account for 52% and 48% of the population. In Junagadh, 11% of the population is less than six years of age. The Census report also throws light on the literacy rate of the town, which is 73%. This is actually higher than the national average literacy rate that is 59.5%. Out of it, the male literacy rate is 77% and the female literacy rate is 67%.

The Uparkot Fort, Damodar Kund, Ashoka`s Rock Edicts, Chowad Beach, Ahmedpur Mandvi Beach, Sasan Gir Forest and Sanctuary at a distance of 65 km. and Somnath Temple are major attractions in and around the city. The sacred Girnar hills are situated at a distance of 6 km. from Junagadh and have five principal peaks. The peak of Ambaji is famous for the temple of Ambaji.
