Jhunjhunu is a city in the Jhunjhunu District of the western state of India, Rajasthan. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jhunjhunu district. Jaipur is located at a distance of 180 km. from Jhunjhunu and Delhi is at a distance of 245 km. from Jhunjhunu. This city is well connected to the important industrial and commercial cities in the state. The nearest airport is at Jaipur. Jhunjhunu Railway Station of the North Western Railways is the nearest railway station. Geographically, the town is located between 28.13° North latitude and 75.4° East longitude at a height of 323 metres (1059 feet) above mean sea level.
The city was founded in the memory of Jujhar Singh Nehra, a Jat of the Nehra clan. However, Thakur Sardul Singh Shekhawat appropriated the city with the help of Jujhar Singh Nehra in samvat 1787 and after that it became the hub of the Shekhavat clan.
Jhunjhunu is the commercial center for wool, cattle, hides and gram. According to the Indian census report which came out in 2001, states that Jhunjhunu had a population of 100,476. Males account for 53% of the population and females account for 47% of the population. In Jhunjhunu, 18% of the population is less than six years of age. The census report also puts forward the literacy rate. The literacy rate of Jhunjhunu is 60%, which is slightly higher than the national average literacy rate, which is 59.5%. Out of it, the male literacy rate is 69% and the female literacy rate is 50%.
The city is the treasure house of some of the ancient havelis, which are renowned for the fresco paintings. Some of the major havelis in the city, which attracts visitors, are the Narudin Farooqi Haveli, Mohanlal Ishwardas Haveli, Modi Haveli and Kaniram Narsinghdas Tiberwala Haveli. The ancient fort of the city includes Badalgarh Fort, Jorawargarh Fort, Akhegarh Fort and the Khetri Mahal. The mausoleum of the saint, Qamar-ud-Din Shah, a 10th century Jaina temple and the Bihariji Temple are also located in the city.
