Amar Mahal Museum and Library was established in 1975.It is located inside the famous Amar Mahal. Previously Amar Mahal was the royal palace of the Dogra rulers. Amar Mahal was divided into several halls. The largest Durbar Hall showcases wonderful portraits of the Dogra rulers like Maharaja Gulab Singh (founder of the Kashmir state), Maharaja Ranbir Singh, Maharaja Pratap Singh, Raja Ram Singh, Raja Amar Singh, Maharaja Hari Singh and Maharani Tara Devi, Dr. Karan Singh and his wife, Yasho Rajya Lakshmi. The most significant element of this museum is the valuable Golden Throne, which was made and used by Maharaja Hari Singh.
The Library of Amar Mahal has an outstanding collection of over 2000 books. The library occupies the first and the second floors of Amar Mahal. There are books on different subjects like Religion, Philosophy, Political Science, History, Fiction etc. Dr. Karan Singh donated many books from his personal collection. The library has a unique section where hand colored engravings and wood block prints as illustrations are preserved. Researchers from national and international university can use the library through the Internet. There is a room in the ground floor, which contains portraits and photographs of the Kings of Nepal.

The Museum showcases the wonderful suite of Maharani Tara Devi including silver bedspread, the period furniture and photographs, her personal items of clothing and the exclusive Victorian bathroom. There are also two large portraits of Maharajmata Tara Devi and Queen Victoria. The collection of the Art Galleries of the Amar Mahal represent the different types of Indian painting ranging from Kangra style of Indian miniatures paintings to the contemporary paintings of M.F. Hussain, J. Swaminathan, G. R. Santosh, Bikash Battacharjee, Ram Kumar, Laxman Pai and others. The museum is open on all days from 10 am to 12 noon & 3 pm to 5 pm during winter and 5 pm to 7 pm during summer. The museum remains closed on state holidays and on Mondays.
