The very popular serial called Kutumb depicts the love story of a typical middle class girl and a rich spilt brat and their journey of love. It had completely enticed its viewers in its fold. The viewers were literally hooked on to the television sets by the joint family sagas with their manipulative mother in laws and daughter-in-laws. The soap queen, Ekta Kapoor seems to have an uncanny understanding of the pschye of the viewers and is also able to explain the success of each one of the teleserials conceived by her. Kutumb was also a story based on the love story between two youngsters, which was spiced up by their intricate family issues. The story revolves around the opulent Mittal family where Pratham (played by Hiten Tejwani) is portrayed as a Casanova who is in the habit of changing girlfriends at the drop of the hat. It was at this time that a simple and ordinary girl Gauri (played by Gauri Pradhan) walks into his college who hates spoilt brats like Pratham to the core. The other reason of her extreme contempt was that he was responsible for driving her best friend to attempt suicide. When Pratham tries to woo over Gauri she humiliates him in public and this makes him vow for revenge. How this thirst of revenge makes Pratham get bounded into a matrimonial alliance with Gauri and how this couple turns hatred into a memorable love saga is what the soap is all about. The bizzare twists and turns of events following the marriage of Pratham and Gauri leave the whole audience shell-shocked.
Kutumb takes a long and close look at relationships. It also portrays a young daughter-in-law caught in the crossfire of rejection and isolation. The show as first aired on Sony Entertainment Television in the year 2000-2001 and then it stopped midway and then it made a huge comeback in the year 2002 and then continued for a span of two long years. The soap had a brilliant starcast and included the small screen heartthrob Hiten Tejwani and the very gorgeous Gauri Pradhan. The starcast also included other popular actors like Manorama, Poonam Narula Goel, Jayati Bhatia, Shama Deshpande, ali Asgar, Ritu Raj, Kishwar Merchant and others. The serial was directed by Bharat Bhatia and Gautam Sobti and produced under the Balaji Telefilms. This serial is regarded as the omnibus and is one of the many serials by Ekta Kapoor, which seems to have both a good introduction and conclusion. Not only the twists and turns but also the powerhouse performance of the actors are natural. The upsurge of the soap queen and her clan of feel-good serials don`t bother about the most important ingredient of a story that is `sensibility`. The serial Kutumb also zapped in the audience and amused them by the turn of events. Encouraged by the first part of the serial, Ekta Kapoor made an attempt to bring in the second part of the serial.
Desperate efforts were made to make the second part of Kutumb interesting. In this serial the lead characters are kept the same. Hiten Tejwani appears as a rich guy called Pratham Mann who does not believe in love and is not afraid of death. He likes to live in today and not tomorrow. On the other hand Gauri Pradhan plays the character who shares the same name but an entirely different nature. She is very serious about her studies and also earns money by making notes. When Pratham asked her to make notes she agreed but when the questions did not appear in the exam he claimed back his money. But Gauri refused to pay it back claiming that it was her own money. Later on the story takes a different turn with Gauri suffering from cancer and then her death completely shatters Pratham. Then the entire double role sequences follows. These kinds of sweet love stories are expected to appear again and again on screen where the determination of the lovers are valued keeping in mind the respect of their families.
