Jabalpur is a prominent city in the Jabalpur district of the central Indian State, Madhya Pradesh. Geographically, it is situated in the Mahakoshal region of India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jabalpur district. It is a historical city whose reference can be found in the epic of Mahabharat. It is connected to the cities of Nagpur, Raipur, Bhopal, Allahabad and Sagar, as it is strategically located near NH 7. It is the headquarters of the West Central Railway Zone and a major railhead on the Allahabad-Itarsi section of the Howrah- Mumbai main line. The Dumna airport situated at a distance of 20 km is the nearest airport from Jabalpur. It is located between 23.17° North latitude and 79.95° East longitude at a height of 411 metres (1348 feet) above mean sea level.
The name of the city Jabalpur came from Arabic word `Jabal` which means rock.

Therefore the word Jabalpur means city of rocks. The city was known as Tripuri during the reign of Hayahaya rulers. In the 13th century it was the capital of the Kalchuri dynasty and the Gondas. The city survived the Mughal invasion of the 16th century but succumbed to the Maratha invasion in 1739. In 1817 the city became a part of the British Empire and the city was made the commission headquarters of the Narmada.
Jabalpur is the hub of administration, trade and commerce in the state. The Ordinance factory and defense establishments, the headquarters of the West Central Railway Zone, the Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board and the Madhya Pradesh High Court are located in Jabalpur. Industries ranging from traditional ones to high profile ventures exist in Jabalpur while augmenting its socio economic scenario.
As per the 2001 India census report published in 2001, Jabalpur had a population of 951,469. Males and females account for 52% and 48% of the population respectively. In Jabalpur, 12% of the population is less than six years of age. The literacy rate of the city

is also revealed in the census report, which is 75%. This is higher than the national average literacy rate which is 59.5%. Out of it, the male literacy rate is 79% and the female literacy rate is 70%. The city is known as the educational base in the state as it houses some of the well known educational institutes of the country providing ample grounds for higher education.
The city is an ideal tourist destination and a paradise for all nature lovers. The major attraction in the city is the Bhedaghat where the world famous Marble Rocks and the Dhuandhar waterfall (misty shoot) is located. Near Bhedaghat there are ancient caves, which contains historical statues. The place is known as Chausatyogini. The Kanha Kisli national Park is located in the vicinity of the city, which has successfully implemented the tiger conservation Project. The Bandhavgarh and the Pench National Reserve are also exciting excursion sites in the neighborhood.
