Haveri district , Karnataka

Haveri District is a prominent district in the south Indian state of Karnataka. It is located in the center of Karnataka and is equidistant from Bidar in the north and Kollegal in the south. It is encircled by the districts of Dharwad in the north, Gadag in the northeast, Davangere in the south, Bellary in the east, Shimoga in the southwest and Uttar Kannada on the west and northwest. The district headquarters is in Haveri, which is an important trading town and has a number of educational institutions. The rivers flowing through the district are Varada, Dharma, Kumudvati, and Tungabhadra. Before becoming a separate district Haveri was a part of Dharwad district.

The India census report published in 2001reveals that the district has a population of 1,439,116. Out of this, urban population amounts for 20.78%. The important towns in the district are Haveri, which is the seat of administration in the district, Ranibennur, a business hub, Hangal,Akki-alur, Kumar Pattanam, Byadgi, Bankapura, Kaginele and Rattihalli. The district has an agricultural and an industrial base. The district is dotted with numerous temples, which are mostly located in Byadgi, Ranibennur and Savanur. The main festival celebrated in the district is Makar Sankranti. Gangibavi village in the district attracts a lot of devotees from the northern part of Karnataka during the festival.
