Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi was the member of costituent assembly of India and was the first Chief Minister of Assam.

Gopinath BordoloiGopinath Bordoloi was born on 1890. He completed his graduation from the Scottish Church College, Calcutta.He was influenced by Gandhiji and joined Indian National Congress.He participated in several campaigns in the freedom movement.He displayed his ability as a leader and held some crucial posts in the congress party.In 1946 he was selected as the member as the costituent assembly of India. During partition Muslim League wanted to separate Assam and include Hindu Assam into the Muslim-majority East Pakistan.He protested against it and prevented the divisiom with the help of British Government.After independence he again prevented the inclusion of Assam with China. At that time he got huge support from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. During partition he also rescued millions of Hindu refugees who escaped from East Pakistan due to communal violence.He served as the first Chief Minister of Assam.He passed away in 1950.He was posthumasly awarded the Bharat Ratna-the highest civilian award of India in the year 1999.
